Getting from Stratford Station to UCL Marshgate and Hotels on foot

Most visitors will arrive to Stratford station as noted below. Getting to UCL Marshgate building from Stratford station is not straightforward. It is very confusing and easy to go wrong and get lost. To minimise that I've created specific on the ground directions for those aiming to walk either to Marshgate or to the local hotels identified on Where to Stay. These are in PDF format so you can download before you leave and have on your phone or tablet, accessible even if you don't have data signal.

Click below to download these instructions. You can also get a Taxi to Pool Street (closest accessible road, very near Marshgate) or direct to the hotels too.

International visitors

The target destination is UCL East Marshgate. Google maps will accurately pin this location. The best What3Words are: ///moved.means.hobby which is the entrance to the Marshgate building we expect you to come to. In general, the easiest/simplest way to get to Marshgate from central London and the international Airports is to take the Elizabeth Line or Central Line to Stratford station (note on some apps, this station is called Stratford (London) station -  it is the same one). Your best friend when travelling by public transport in London is the Transport for London App TfL Go [App Store; Google Play].

By plane

These are the main airports for flying to London, in order of 'ease of getting to Stratford Station, near UCL East, Marshgate. The main way from central London is to take a train to Stratford station (either with the Elizabeth Line or C2C, which is also served by the London Underground: Central Line, DLR and Jubilee lines.

By train

The only way to enter the UK by train is via the Eurostar, which arrives in St Pancras International station. You can take this either from France or Netherlands/Belgium and connections from Germany. In St Pancras International, you head to Platform 11 or 12 (or neighbouring platforms) to get a 5 min train ride vis SouthEastern trains to Stratford International station (different from Stratford (London) station). At Stratford International you can walk to Marshgate, but you might want to take the DLR from Stratford International to Stratford Station if you have luggage and walk from Stratford Station. The walk between Stratford International and Stratford Station is about 8 mins if you don't get lost!

By boat

There are international ferries from Spain (via Santander and Bilbao) operated by Brittany Ferries that go to Portsmouth International Harbour. It is possible to take a train to London from there, arriving in London Waterloo. See the TfL Go app for planning to Stratford station from there. Other ferries arrive from France (via Caen, St Malo, Cherbourg and Le Havre with Brittany Ferries) to Portsmouth and from Dieppe to Newhaven (DFDS) and of course Calais & Dunkirk to Dover. Ferries across the North Sea operate between the Netherlands and Harwich, though it is likely there are better routes from the Netherlands than the ferry (e.g. train or, if driving via Calais-Dover EuroTunnel).

By car

To drive the the UK from overseas requires entering either via the EuroTunnel (drive onto a train at Calais, drive off in Dover), or car ferry (see By Boat above for key routes). From there, you need to set your destination on your maps guide to your chosen hotel, where the parking will be available. There is no parking at UCL East Marshgate.

By train

We will put here only directions if you are travelling to London from outside the South East or southern parts of the East (ie. Cambridge or below) as we expect you already know your way into London. Travellers from Scotland, Wales, NE, NW, WM and SW will likely arrive in one of several stations, depending on the route:

Scotland, North East or North West England: arriving into Euston Station or Kings Cross. Very likely the best/easiest and quickest route is to head to the London Underground with the target of getting on the Elizabeth Line out Eastbound to Stratford. This will mean going from the train platform (at Euston), and following the signs for London Underground, and heading for the Northern line (Black) Southbound on the Charing Cross Branch, heading for Tottenham Court Road stations where you can change on the Elizabeth Line Eastbound to Stratford. If arriving in King's Cross this means heading for the London Underground towards the Circle/Hammersmith/Metropolitan lines (yellow/pink/purple) Eastbound and taking a any one of those 3 lines to Liverpool Street station where you change onto the Central line (red) Eastbound to Stratford station.

Wales or the South West: Arriving into Paddington Station or Waterloo. Arriving into Paddington is the easiest as you simply need to head to the Elizabeth Line Eastbound, and get on a train direct to Stratford station. If arriving into Waterloo you can head to the London Underground Jubilee line (silver) Eastbound, direct to Stratford station.

By coach

If taking a coach it is likely you will need to change at London Victoria Coach Station. It is possible to book tickets that go from London Victoria to Stratford. National Express allows you to book with the destination "London Stratford, also for Westfield" which is the right destination, but you will likely need to change at London Victoria.

By car

Set your destination on your maps guide to your chosen hotel, where the parking will be available. There is no parking at UCL East Marshgate. if you are interested but uncertain about hiring an EV (because you have never driven one before and are uncertain about charging), get in touch as Adam (the Chair) has one and can advise. We encourage those coming by car to think about using an EV if possible.
